Interesting that Nixon took the USD off gold at the peak of US conventional oil production; from which point on the US Govt Debt Outstanding, which had been rising at USD5-8 bn per year, took off.

Great piece. After reading an article many years ago by the late Richard Heinberg on the Post Carbon Institute that suggested the EROI of the (presumably) US food system was about 0.1 (worse if food waste is accounted for), I looked into the New Zealand situation with respect to a simple loaf of bread - seed to pantry - 0.75 i.e. Energy negative. At the farm gate the grain was about EROI 2.1, so between the farm gate and the pantry all that "free energy" offset from the sun was lost. With declining input fuel EROI the rough back of the envelope calculation for the US system is now about 0.07.
