Your critical framework is excellent and gives us a clear way to examine these kinds of proposals, which are ultimately untenable. This thing of ours has momentum and inertia, making it nearly impossible to change anything at MTI scale before human habitat is beyond preservation or repair. We rarely focus on the geopolitical, social, and cultural coordination problems posed by these fanciful, global, technocratic, and complex solutions to saving neoliberal capitalism. Furthermore, few people are interested in the polycrisis; instead, they seek stories that make them feel good and good about themselves. Culture is very hard to change, regardless of the kinds of efforts organizations undertake. I see no evidence that people will fight and sacrifice to slow down our insane dash to mass starvation, conflict, and disease. Future challenges will be brutal. Nothing lasts forever, and people will do something or another, so have at it and come what may.
